Description

Extinosad Eliminator Liquid

Extinosad Eliminator liquid is made by Elanco

It comes in 250ml, 1L and 5L

It is registered organic, and is a super safe product to use

It needs to be mixed with water, at the rate on the label specific to each type of use

It has no withholds. Re-handling is as soon as sheep are dry.

It is a brilliant product for killing maggots and lice.

It is a very underutilised product during the fly season particularly for flystrike wounds.

Extinosad liquid must be mixed fresh daily in all applications – it is an organic molecule, that is super safe with no withholds, but the tradeoff is that it breaks down in UV light and needs to be mixed fresh daily.

The dose/mixing rate is quite small, it goes a long way, hence the cost per bottle.

The rate for each application is different – farmers should ALWAYS read the label carefully for rates and details for each type of use.

Claims on the label:

“For the control of lice in sheep with short wool and long wool”

“For treatment and prevention of blowfly strike on sheep”

“For blowfly strike protection in mulesing and other wounds of sheep”

What do these mean and tips for use?

  • A wound dressing for flystrike (needs to be mixed with water at appropriate rate), to knockdown maggots and provide short protection (up to 8 days protection in ideal conditions) against re-strike
  • A jetting fluid for short term fly control, particularly where safety or nil withholds are preferred/required.
    • For best results, this should be done by hand jetting application (using a proper hand jetting wand).
    • The mixed up wash needs to get to skin level.
    • Sheep should be over 6 weeks wool.
    • Correct technique and a good PSI should be used to achieve this wetting to the skin.
    • Period of protection will vary – the label states short term protection for 4-6 weeks. However it needs to be kept in mind that this is when jetted correctly to the skin, and there is a good amount of fleece. Because it breaks down in UV light, and because heavy rain and heavy fly pressure will reduce amount of chemical available, therefore on lambs, sheep with shorter fleece, or meat breeds with more open wool, or if heavy rain and high fly pressure are present - protection will be shorter.
    • Existing strikes are always more prone to restrike when moisture and fly pressure is high. Seek advice in high fly pressure seasons.
    • Good technique is essential to success!!
    • Minimum 80 PSI for most adult sheep, 90 PSI in longer wool, 40-50 PSI for lambs

  • A jetting fluid for knockdown of lice, particularly useful given the no withholds.
    • Apply mixed up jetting wash (water mixed with product at recommended rate) via a hand jetting wand
    • This must be to the skin ALL OVER the sheep. Jetting races can be hit and miss.
    • When jetted thoroughly to the skin level all over the sheep, it will knockdown sheep body lice and aid in the control of lice assuming the treatment is part of a good lice program (clean muster, all sheep treated, thorough treatment etc.). Seek program advice.
    • To achieve best result, it requires good technique and high enough PSI to achieve this wetting - minimum 80 PSI for most adult sheep, 90 PSI in longer wool, 40-50 PSI for lambs
    • Sheep should be over 6 weeks wool
    • The rate is ½ L per month of wool growth, but in practical reality it will be a minimum of 3L of wash to adequately wet a sheep, then goes up from there based on wool length – and more in larger crossbreeds, less in a smaller merino
    • Re-treatment off-shears, with another product suitable to off-shears treatment, at the next shearing, is always recommended as a follow up, because it is hard to eradicate lice in one treatment.

  • It can also be used for dipping for lice, via a suitable plunge dip
    • Sheep must be 2-6 weeks off-shears.
    • Do not dip sheep over 6 weeks off-shears.
    • Read the label carefully, as there is a bit of info to follow to get the rates, replenishment and procedure each day during and after dipping correctly.
