GlanEry 7in1 + B12 for sheep
GlanEry 7in1 is a vaccine for sheep, made by Zoetis
It combines Glanvac 6B12 + Eryvac - both vaccines were previously used separately
It protects against the 5 major clostridial diseases, cheesy gland, and helps to prevent lamb arthritis when used in the right program. It also contains B12.
Dose rate is always 1ml
It comes in 250ml and 500ml. There are no withhold periods.
The vaccine should be given just under the skin, using 18g ¼” needles, on the side of the neck – see second page for more detail
Key with this vaccine:
The Eryvac portion of the vaccine is to protect against Lamb Arthritis
Always, however we keep in mind that Erysipelas arthritis is only one cause of arthritis.
Lamb arthritis is caused by bacteria entering into wounds of lambs – most often through the umbilical cord wound in the week after birth or into wounds following marking or mulseing
Lamb arthritis causes swollen joints, often the front knees, but sometimes all four. It will be painful, causing lameness, and often ill-thrift.
Lamb arthritis programs require a conversation to discuss current incidence, expectation, vaccine use and timing, plus other methods of prevention – the vaccine should not be started unless this conversation has been had with a trusted advisor and a program set up to ensure it is used at the correct times and expectations have been explained.
In most programs, ewe vaccination to put antibodies through the colostrum is the first focus – essentially we are vaccinating the ewe to protect the lamb from the times of risk.
Note that the antibodies coming through the colostrum are providing short term protection, but not acting on the lambs own immune system for sustained protection.
What does a program look like?
In the first year of a program, the ewes or maidens require 2 doses to start the program.
If the ewe has previously had 6in1 and been kept up to date, then their first dose can be straight Eryvac if the farmer wishes and it’s available, then the second dose must be GlanEry.
If history of 6in1 is incomplete or unknown, then use GlanEry as both doses and bring the ewe up to date for 6in1 also.
An annual booster is required each year after that. See next page for timing of doses.
Timing of Doses:
- The first dose of Eryvac (or GlanEry), can be anytime from joining up to 4 weeks prior to the second dose.Â
- The second dose, which should always be GlanEry, is given 4-8 weeks pre-lambingÂ
The timing of the second dose is important, and the subsequent annual boosters – always 4-8 weeks pre-lambing
Lambs can have a dose at lamb marking if incidence has been seen post-marking previously, but for many producers the ewe dose is enough – this decision should always be based on incidence and timing and a conversation with an advisor.
Other reasons we might give GlanEry to lambs:
- To set up maiden ewes so their program is started as lambs and they are ready to go for their own pre-lambing dose to protect their own lambs, but this requires an extra dose so often this is preferred to be just two doses in their first year of joining
- To set up lambs with their own antibodies to protect against an incidence seen at another time beyond marking, such as a lamb shearing.
Always administer subcutaneously (just under the skin)
18g ¼inch (6mm) needles should always be used
The vaccine should ideally be given down the neck, at least 50mm from the ear, in a spot mid-neck where the flat neck muscle lies – this avoids critical structures of the neck and head.
NEVER give Glanvac or GlanEry on the same side of the neck as Gudair, as they might mix under the skin and be rendered ineffective and/or produce larger vaccine site reactions.
Safety vaccinators are recommended for administering the vaccine, Glanvac and GlanEry can go through the Gudair blue sekurus safety vaccinator (wash it out really well after Gudair, or ideally have one for Gudair and one for Glanvac/GlanEry)
GlanEry can also go through the orange shrouded Zoetis safeshot, as these are designed for Zoetis sheep vaccine with a fixed 1ml dose.
