Dectomax VÂ Â Injectable
Dectomax V is a dual active injectable drench, made by Zoetis
It contains Doramectin and Levamisole
Dectomax V is the only dual acting injectable drench – meaning both active ingredients work together to target intestinal worms. It has excellent efficacy.
It is registered for both cattle and sheep Â
Decto V is targeted particularly to young cattle under 18 months, or under 400kg.
Use in sheep is fairly new and still going to take some time for use within sheep producers programs.
Always inject sub-cutaneous (just under the skin) on the side of the neck
It comes in 500ml glass bottles, either singularly, or as part of a 3L (6 x 500ml) Victory pack in a red + grey tub with bonus 1 x cattle injector and 1 x sheep injector.
ESIÂ Cattle - 35 days
Sheep – 69 days
Do not use in lactating dairy cattle or within 60 days before calving where milk is to be used for human consumption
Do not use in calves under 3 months of age
Do not use in sheep under 15kg
- Be careful not to overdose smaller sheep - where weight range varies considerably, be sure to draft sheep into two groups so they receive a more appropriate dose
- Do not use in sheep that are in ill-health or severely stressed/emaciated
Dose rate:
Cattle – 1ml per 25kg
Sheep – 1ml per 25kg (applicator + dose table increments in .2ml, from 15kg)
Do NOT use in goats
Where cattle over 250kg are being treated:
Do not exceed 10ml at any one injection site.
For over 250kg, split the dose rate into two injection sites that are at least an inch apart (ok to be on the same side of the neck). This means a 300kg animal, needing 12ml, would receive 2 x 6ml injections of the drench.
It has so far been proven to have exceptional efficacy, so it should become part of most producers’ programs over time with the right advice on use.
Another benefit of injectable drenching is reliability of dosing – Zoetis website:
“When a drug is delivered by injection, all the potential barriers to absorption are avoided. An injectable is deposited below the skin and absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Injectable drenches therefore achieve higher peak blood and tissue levels compared to pour-ons”
Dectomax V is quite a thick liquid, and can be even slower to draw and inject in cold weather.
It doesn’t flow as easily as some other injectable products – however, please note that when given truly just under the skin, it will push fairly well through the applicator and not cause too much resistance going into the animal.
Injection technique is important for use - when muscles or structures of the neck/ear/head are hit with the needle, it will be mighty hard to inject so care should be taken.
ALWAYS use 18g ¼” needles for sheep, injected just under the skin on the side of the neck.
Use 18g ¼” needles on most cattle, especially those up to 12 months of age, this seems short for cattle, but when injected on the side of the neck at 90 degrees to the neck it is actually the easiest way to inject this drench under the skin!
Otherwise 16g ½” needles can be used on older cattle, best at a 45-60 degree angle to achieve injection just under the skin.
ApplicatorÂ
For cattle always use the 10ml metal Dectomax V branded injector.
For sheep, use the Dectomax V specific red adjustable shrouded sheep injector. Be careful that the .6ml dose rate for 15kg sheep is a very short push when injecting and draw back can be slow. Always set the dose rate on this applicator to the white line, not the red one!
Re-treatment interval:
Cattle - 28 days Sheep – 33 days
