Extinosad Aerosol
Extinosad Aerosol cans are made by Elanco
There is only one size – 370g
It has no withholds, and is ready to use from the can
It contains two active ingredients, Spinosad + Chlorhexidine
It quickly kills maggots, and helps clean up infection – so it is brilliant for flystrike wounds - best on the shelf.
It is a blue foam - like shaving cream. The blue dye is scourable.
Each can will provide enough for 20-25 bigger wounds (think the size of 2-3 post-it notes), or 30-40 smaller wounds (think less than the size of a post-it note)
It is a super safe product and super easy to use
It can also be used on any other flesh wound, as well as dehorning wounds in cattle.
It is for knockdown of maggots, wound “clean up”, helps with healing, and then a VERY short protection period from re-strike.
It does not give long term fly protection – a few days to a week at best – but for sheep it can be used in conjunction with longer term fly products (always use the aerosol first).
For larger flystrike wounds, the aerosol goes liberally on the wound, and a product like Clik goes around the edges of the wound and out onto the wool a bit.
If using the aerosol on a smaller wound or flystrike, the aerosol goes on and over the wound. Clik may not be needed for these wounds, pending season and farmer preference.
It can be used in the same way for mulesing wounds where an injectable or oral pain relief product is being used – the pain relief is inside the animal, so the aerosol can be chosen to go on the wound.
The aerosol is rarely used in conjunction with Trisolfen on mulesing wounds. Usually a farmer will just use Trisolfen over the wound, plus or minus Clik which goes on the edges of the wound and out into the wool a bit depending on the month of mulesing and if flystrike risk warrants it.
