Extinosad P/O is a sheep body lice backliner, made by Elanco

Active ingredient is Spinosad

It is SUPER SAFE to use, and has no smell. It is allowable as an organic input, for organic properties certified with Australian Certified Organic.

It is ready-to-use, water based. It comes in 5L and 20L

Sheep rehandling period – as soon as the product has dried

It is a backliner to control sheep lice, that can be used:

• Up to 7 days off-shears
• Or in suckling unshorn lambs
• Or in long wool (over 6 months wool). Note that even though Extinosad in long wool will kill a large proportion of lice present when applied correctly, any long wool treatment should always be viewed as a salvage treatment, and a follow up treatment off-shears is imperative.

When applied correctly, it will knockdown existing lice plus kill the next hatching of eggs (no lice product kills lice eggs)

Applicator - Use through a 4 hole T-bar, ideally using a Genesis power doser.

It can be used through a manual applicator with a 4 hole T-bar, however this is incredibly hard work on hands if doing more than 100 sheep.

Extinosad contains Spinosad – from the Spinosyn family and therefore is a true rotational product to Viper and Avenge for sheep lice.

Any lice product needs careful attention to application and be part of a management program to tackle lice (ie. Treating all sheep at the same time, not mixing treated and untreated sheep, treat bought in sheep, good fences)

Eradicating lice is not easy, and almost always needs 2 consecutive treatments (ie. In long wool then follow up off-shears, or off-shears two years in a row) plus careful management. Always seek advice from an advisor.

Extinosad is water based, so it has no smell during use. Use a power doser ideally, or manual applicator, with a 4 hole T-bar.

Rinse applicator through with water before and after use.

Applying Extinosad:

Extinosad has a lower dose rate compared to Viper and Avenge, which for some farmers can make it harder to achieve the correct application pattern, however it is such a safe product to use with short withholds, that it is a great choice and is still easy enough to achieve coverage if time is taken.  coverage

**Application is super important to have the chemical reach the lice**

For adult sheep, apply in two bands, one either side of the backbone, in an unbroken line all the way from poll to tail (actual application can be applied tail to poll, whichever direction the operator finds easiest).

Gravity and lanolin then move the product down and around the sheep, to reach every part of the sheep at skin level, therefore reaching all the lice present.

Often, a bit more than the dose rate is needed to achieve correct coverage.

Good technique and patience are key, taking time on each sheep then go back up and down the raceway to check, to ensure “gaps” are filled.

If sheep are moving about too much or the operator doesn’t achieve the correct coverage from poll to tail it will be necessary to take time to fill gaps.

 WHEN APPLIED WITHIN 24 HOURS OFF-SHEARS, PROTECTION PERIOD OF 4 WEEKS APPLIES

LONG WOOL:

PRODUCT CAN ALSO BE USED IN LONG WOOL, OVER 6 MONTHS WOOL, FOR SUPPRESSION OF A LICE INFESTATION TO GET SHEEP TO THE NEXT SHEARING WHERE RE-TREATMENT OFF SHEARS MUST BE DONE TO CONTROL LICE
