Description
Jetaway (generic of Coopers “Blowfly and Lice”)
Jetaway is a blowfly and lice jetting fluid, ideally hand-jetting
For –
Short term protection of flystrike
Knockdown control of lice
Can be used as a dressing fluid to kill maggots in existing blowfly strikes.
The active ingredient is Ivermectin
Made by IO, comes in 5L and 20L
ESI: 7 days
Wool withhold: 6 weeks
It can be used in sheep of all ages
It is a concentrate, so first needs to be diluted with water at the appropriate rate for each use. See label.
NOT for use in plunge dips.
It is best used through a hand jetting wand (like the IO branded hand jetting wand with the plate with 3 jets under it)
Best results are achieved when wool is thoroughly saturated to the skin. Correct equipment and good technique is essential to success.
Ideally the pump that runs the hand jetting wand, will have a pressure guage. Pressure is important to soak sheep to the skin.
Minimum 80 PSI for most adult sheep, 90 PSI in longer wool, 40-50 PSI for lambs
For Blowfly strike protection:
- Provides protection against blowfly strike for up to 12 weeks where jetted to the skin level, and will kill maggots on existing strikes where the jetted fluid reaches these strikes.
- Note the actual protection period afforded against flystrike can however be less than 12 weeks – the label states “up to 12 weeks under low to moderate fly pressure”. This means that when a fly season is bad, with plenty of moisture and flies, 12 weeks might come down vastly – in a bad year it might be 6 weeks or less.
- Other conditions will also affect protection period – type of sheep, season, wool length, existing strikes or presence of any fleece disease like rot or dermo. This is the same with any fly product so it’s something for producers to be aware of. See label for more info.
- Ideally use in sheep with over 6 weeks wool. It can be used in sheep with less than 6 weeks wool, but a shorter protection period should be expected, as it’s hard to adequately wet sheep without much wool. This is because the water tends to “spit off”, as there is no wool to help hold the jetting wash and allow it to soak down to the skin and then around the sheep. With over 6 weeks wool, the hand jetting wand can be “nuzzled” a little into the wool as it is pulled slowly across the sheep.
- The chemical is more exposed to the weather in short wool, so ideally over 6 weeks wool should be our minimum wool for this product and application method.
- The rate on the label is minimum 2.5L of wash per sheep, target to the backline and breech, with thorough soaking of existing strikes. It often takes more than 2.5L to achieve this.
For Lice control:
- When jetted thoroughly to the skin level all over the sheep, it will knockdown sheep body lice and aid in the control of lice assuming the treatment is part of a good lice program (clean muster, all sheep treated, thorough treatment etc.)
- Ideally use in sheep with over 6 weeks wool – see information above, it is hard to adequately wet a sheep via hand jetting without much wool.
- Re-treatment off-shears, with another product suitable to off-shears treatment, at the next shearing, is always recommended as a follow up, because it is hard to eradicate lice in one treatment.
- The rate is ½ L per month of wool growth, but in practical reality it will be a minimum of 3L of wash to adequately wet a sheep, then up from there - more in larger crossbreeds than on a small merino.
This is a great product to consider if lice control is needed close to the fly season, as not only does this product offer an alternative chemical active to the other fly and lice products, it can do two jobs in one at the correct rates and wetting. When hand jetted correctly, this product can also offer a better long wool lice control result than Extinosad for less cost. The producer will need some advice on hand jetting correctly if they have never done it – it’s not super hard, but needs some set up and tips to make sure the sheep are wetted thoroughly.
